Susquehanna County Approves Ordinance for Data Center Preparedness

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE

Susquehanna County commissioners approved an amendment to the Subdivision and Land Development Ordinance (SALDO) to define data centers and establish provisions for their future development. This decision follows a public hearing where officials emphasized that there are currently no proposals for data centers in the county, highlighting the ordinance's focus on preparedness.

The new regulations include a requirement for data centers to be set back 200 feet from residential and community properties, a sound study to be conducted, and a water feasibility study if nonpublic water is used. The ordinance restricts data center heights to 60 feet.

Local residents expressed concerns about potential noise, pollution, and the proximity of centers to homes, leading to suggestions for further amendments. The ordinance will be reviewed by the planning commission based on community feedback.
