SUSTAQUA Project Enhances Sustainable Water Resource Policies in Europe
SUSTAQUA aims to improve water management policies across Europe, focusing on reclaimed and rainwater usage. The project addresses climate change impacts and emphasizes the need for sustainable water practices, including governance improvements and reducing groundwater reliance.

The SUSTAQUA project, part of the Interreg Europe Programme, seeks to enhance policies for sustainable water resources, prioritizing reclaimed and rainwater. Despite the EU's Water Reuse Regulation enacted in 2020, reclaimed water usage in Europe remains under 3%, necessitating urgent action.
The partnership includes entities from Spain, Malta, Hungary, North Macedonia, Sweden, and Denmark, with Murcia recognized for its leadership in water reuse, utilizing over 90% of treated wastewater. SUSTAQUA targets groundwater dependency reduction and evaluates carbon footprints in water management.
The project also aims to improve governance frameworks to encourage alternative water resource utilization. Addressing these challenges is critical for long-term economic sustainability within the regions involved.
