Swain County Implements 12-Month Moratorium on Data Centers
Swain County has enacted a 12-month moratorium on new data center constructions following community concerns. This decision reflects a broader trend in Western North Carolina where multiple jurisdictions are restricting data center developments due to environmental and resource usage issues.

Swain County Commissioners approved a 12-month moratorium on new data centers, following a public meeting attended by 140 residents. The community displayed strong support for this decision, with some advocating for a more permanent ban.
The moratorium initiates a research phase for the county to consider stricter regulations on data center development. Two ad hoc committees composed of local residents will be formed to assist in this process. Swain County joins several other regions in Western North Carolina that have similarly restricted data center constructions due to environmental concerns, particularly regarding water usage.
