Switch has signed a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Ormat Technologies for 13MW of geothermal power from the Salt Wells geothermal power plant in Fallon, Nevada. This marks Ormat's first agreement with a data center developer and includes an option for a 7MW on-site solar farm.
Power delivery is set to begin in Q1 of 2030. The Salt Wells plant, operational since 2009, was acquired by Ormat in October 2023. Enhancements to the plant are scheduled for completion in Q2 2026, which will enable the delivery of approximately 13MW of geothermal energy.
This partnership supports Switch's sustainability objectives amidst rising energy demands from AI infrastructure. Other tech firms, including Meta and Google, are also pursuing geothermal energy solutions.
