SwRI Enhances HEAT Facility for Advanced Hypersonic Testing
Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) has upgraded its High Energy Annex Test (HEAT) facility to enable testing of hypersonic technologies at Mach 4. This expansion addresses critical gaps in hypersonic vehicle development by simulating extreme conditions such as high altitudes and temperatures exceeding 1400 degrees Fahrenheit.

The SwRI HEAT facility, originally established in 2016 for gas turbine combustor testing, now includes a new ejector system to simulate high-altitude, low-pressure conditions down to 2.5 PSI. This allows for accurate testing of scramjets, ramjets, small gas turbines, and rocket thrusters in a controlled environment, achieving temperatures up to 1400 degrees Fahrenheit and Mach 4 conditions.
The enhancements support ongoing research aimed at improving hypersonic vehicle capabilities, with significant implications for aerospace development. The ability to simulate these extreme environments reduces the costs and risks associated with real-world high-speed flight testing.
