Tanzanian Prime Minister Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba laid the foundation stone for a TSh 49.9 billion power substation and transmission lines project in Mkata, Tanga Region, on February 13, 2026. Funded by the Tanzanian government, the substation costs TSh 44.14 billion, and the transmission line costs TSh 5.75 billion.
The project aims to enhance electricity availability and reliability in Handeni and Kilindi Districts, particularly for graphite mining in Kwamsisi village. Construction began on August 17, 2023, and will create 120 local jobs, with completion expected by November 16, 2026. Electricity will now be sourced from Chalinze, improving service stability and reducing outages.
