Tarbela 5th Extension Hydropower Project 56% Complete, Generation Starts April 2027
The Tarbela 5th Extension Hydropower Project is currently 56% complete, with its first electricity generation unit expected to come online in April 2027. Once finished, the project will add 1,530 MW to the National Grid, increasing the installed capacity at Tarbela Dam from 4,888 MW to 6,418 MW. WAPDA Chairman Lt Gen Muhammad Saeed has called for accelerated construction efforts to meet deadlines.

The Tarbela 5th Extension Hydropower Project (T5 HPP) is 56% complete, with the first unit scheduled to generate electricity in April 2027. The project has a total capacity of 1530 MW, funded by the World Bank and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, contributing 1.466 billion units of electricity annually to the National Grid.
The installed capacity at Tarbela Dam will increase from 4888 MW to 6418 MW upon completion. WAPDA Chairman Lt Gen Muhammad Saeed emphasized the need for accelerated construction efforts during his recent site visit.
