Tłı̨chǫ Government and Fortune Minerals Pursue Joint Venture for NICO Mine Road Funding
The Tłı̨chǫ government and Fortune Minerals Ltd. are forming a joint venture to secure up to $50 million in federal funding for a 50-kilometre access road to the NICO cobalt-gold-bismuth-copper mine. This initiative aims to enhance Tłı̨chǫ participation in critical mineral projects and improve regional infrastructure.

The Tłı̨chǫ government and Fortune Minerals Ltd. plan to establish a joint venture to apply for federal funding from the Critical Minerals Infrastructure Fund (CMIF) for a 50-kilometre road to the NICO mine. The NICO project, located on Tłı̨chǫ land, is currently accessed via a 10-kilometre ice road.
Both parties have previously signed access agreements in 2013 and 2019 to facilitate project development. An all-season road, the Tłı̨chǫ Highway, opened in November 2021, enhancing connectivity to Whatì. The proposed road will require an Impact Benefit Agreement and adherence to protective regulations, indicating a structured approach to resource development and community engagement.
