TCP Circular is advancing plans for a plastics recycling plant at the Port of Sunderland, creating over 100 jobs. The site, covering 12 acres, is currently undergoing preparatory engineering works, including a new access road.
Planning permission was granted by Sunderland City Council in February 2023. The facility aims to process about 100,000 tonnes of low-value mixed plastic waste per year, which would otherwise be incinerated or sent to landfill. It is expected to be operational by 2028, using pyrolysis technology to produce raw materials for the petrochemical industry, while self-generated gas will power the facility.
