Tech Giants Evaluate AI Data Center Proposals at DOE's Savannah River Site in South Carolina
Major technology companies, including Microsoft, Google, and Oracle, participated in a meeting regarding potential AI data centers at the Department of Energy's Savannah River Site in South Carolina. The DOE is soliciting proposals for AI data centers and energy infrastructure across 3,103 acres at the site, which has ten tracts suitable for development.
Current energy infrastructure includes several 115kV lines and a 20MW biomass plant, with two solar facilities planned to be operational by 2029. The NNSA emphasizes the strategic importance of the site for nuclear power and AI compute capabilities, with intentions to integrate these missions. The meeting also highlighted available loans for nuclear and power projects, indicating significant interest in advancing energy solutions alongside data center development.
