Teesworks Seeks Approval for Major Data Centre Amid Competing Energy Proposals

CARBON CAPTUREHYDROGEN

Amidst an evolving technological landscape, Teesworks is positioning itself to become a key player in the UK's artificial intelligence sector by proposing a substantial 5 million square foot data centre on a repurposed steel site. This initiative, which received approval in July, is part of a broader government invitation for bids to establish five dedicated AI growth zones across the nation. Submitted to Middlesbrough Council in June, the application encompasses not only the data centre but also office accommodations, battery storage, a substation, and necessary infrastructure enhancements.

The stakes are high as Teesworks aims to emerge as the second AI growth zone, following a similar project planned for Culham in Oxfordshire. However, this ambitious plan encounters a formidable challenge from BP's proposed HyGreen facility, which focuses on blue hydrogen production and carbon capture. The energy demands of a mega data centre could conflict with the government's green agenda, raising questions about sustainable development in the region.

Recent insights from Lichfields have cast doubt on BP's commitment to its H2 Teesside project, further complicating the energy landscape at Teesworks. As the UK seeks to bolster its data centre capacity by an additional 6 gigawatts by 2030—tripling current levels—Teesworks finds itself at a crossroads of opportunity and competition.

Other regions, including York, North Yorkshire, and Doncaster, have submitted bids for AI growth zones, indicating a robust race for technological investment. Teesworks, revitalizing 4,500 acres of brownfield land, has garnered support from local leaders like Mayor Ben Houchen, who has emphasized the area's historical significance in technological innovation.

Houchen's vision is clear: to transform Teesside, Darlington, and Hartlepool into a hub for cutting-edge technology, creating well-paying jobs for the local workforce. With the necessary land, power, and a track record of rapidly advancing major projects, the region stands poised to attract one of the coveted AI growth zones, paving the way for a future where technology thrives in the heart of the North East.
