TerraPower Receives Federal Approval for Natrium Nuclear Power Plant in Wyoming
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has granted TerraPower a construction permit for its Natrium nuclear power plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming. This marks the first commercial nuclear reactor approval in the U.S. in a decade and the first liquid sodium-cooled reactor permitted in the nation. The plant will generate 345 megawatts of electricity, with a capacity to ramp up to 500 megawatts. The $4 billion project, backed by $2 billion from the Department of Energy, has begun construction on non-nuclear facilities, with plans to start the main construction soon.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has awarded TerraPower a construction permit for the Natrium nuclear power plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming, marking the first U.S. commercial nuclear reactor approval in ten years.
The facility will produce 345 megawatts of electricity and has energy storage to increase capacity to 500 megawatts. The $4 billion project is partially funded by a $2 billion commitment from the Department of Energy. Construction on non-nuclear components started in 2024, and the NRC will formally issue the construction permit soon, with main construction anticipated to begin shortly.
