Tesla's Texas Lithium Refinery Begins Operations, Aiming to Reduce U.S. Reliance on China
Tesla has launched the first lithium refinery in North America in Corpus Christi, Texas, capable of producing battery-grade lithium hydroxide directly from spodumene ore. The refinery, which went from groundbreaking to operational in just 19 months, can supply lithium for over 500,000 electric vehicles (EVs) annually.
This project reduces the U.S. reliance on Chinese lithium refining, which currently holds a 60% share of the market. The facility employs a novel refining process that generates minimal waste and produces analcime, a byproduct useful in construction.
It supports 50 GWh of battery production, addressing part of the projected 200 GWh U.S. demand for battery-grade lithium by 2026. Tesla's innovative approach and rapid execution have positioned it as a significant player in the lithium supply chain, enhancing U.S. self-sufficiency in battery materials while mitigating environmental impacts.
