The Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) is initiating TIA 2.0 to transform into a national innovation orchestrator, focusing on impactful industries. The new strategy, beginning in 2022, aims to address economic challenges through enhanced collaboration and funding mechanisms.

The Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) is implementing TIA 2.0, a strategy to evolve from a funding body into a national innovation orchestrator. This new approach emphasizes collaboration across academia, industry, government, and civil society, utilizing a quadruple helix model.
TIA's transition follows a need to address South Africa's economic challenges, including inequality and unemployment, and aims to leverage the country’s resources effectively. The initiative will be executed in three phases, starting with consolidation from 2022 to 2027, followed by growth from 2028 to 2030, and scaling from 2031 to 2035.
TIA will utilize R1.2 billion from a claims settlement to fund TIA 2.0 initiatives, focusing on critical areas such as climate change and hydrogen innovation. Success stories from TIA-supported innovators like Pelebox and Mzansi Mindz illustrate the impact of this support. The agency aims to deepen outreach to underserved communities and enhance technology access.
