TIM Italy Establishes First Quantum-Safe Connection Between Data Centers
TIM Italy conducted the first quantum-safe communication trial between two data centers, demonstrating the viability of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) for sensitive data traffic. The test, spanning approximately 40 kilometers in the Milan metropolitan area, maintained active commercial traffic on the same optical network. The project involved multiple network nodes and validated QKD application in typical data center interconnection scenarios. The initiative aligns with European quantum communication strategies and aims to enhance digital sovereignty and data protection.

TIM Italy has successfully completed the first quantum-safe communication trial between two data centers using operational network infrastructure. The initiative demonstrated the feasibility of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) for secure data traffic in real conditions.
Conducted over a 40-kilometer link in the Milan metropolitan area, the test maintained simultaneous commercial traffic on the same optical network. The project validated QKD in scenarios like data replication and backup routines.
Involving partners like Telsy, QTI, and Noovle, it also integrated with existing network and cybersecurity architectures. This effort aligns with broader European quantum communication strategies, enhancing digital sovereignty and data protection.
