The Yunlin Offshore Wind Farm (OWF), a significant renewable energy project in Taiwan, has officially begun commercial operations with a capacity of 640 megawatts (MW). This development, announced by Yunneng Wind Power Co., Ltd., which is a joint venture comprising Skyborn Renewables, TotalEnergies, Electricity Generating Public Company Limited (EGCO Group), and Sojitz Corporation, elevates Taiwan's total offshore wind capacity to over 3.9 gigawatts (GW).
The Yunlin OWF consists of 80 fully grid-connected wind turbine generators (WTGs) and is projected to provide enough clean energy to power approximately 600,000 households annually. With an expected annual generation of 2,400 gigawatt-hours (GWh), the facility will meet 90% of the non-industrial electricity demand in Yunlin County, simultaneously reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 1.2 million tons per year.
Having secured all necessary electricity business licenses and fulfilled regulatory and contractual obligations, the project marks a significant milestone as it transitions into its operations and maintenance phase. TotalEnergies will lead the technical operations management, with Skyborn providing additional management services.
Located in the Taiwan Strait, 8 to 17 kilometers off Taiwan's west coast, the project encompasses an 82 kmá area with water depths ranging from 7 to 35 meters. Electricity generated is fed into the Taiwanese power grid via two substations near Taixi and Sihu in Yunlin County, under two 20-year power purchase agreements with Taiwan Power Company (TPC).
