TMS Group Expands LNG and Dual-Fuel Fleet Amid Growing Demand for Sustainable Shipping Solutions

HYDROGEN

The TMS Group, under the leadership of George Economou, is significantly expanding its shipbuilding program focused on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carriers and dual-fuel containerships. The latest development involves a substantial order worth $1 billion placed with Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea for four LNG carriers, scheduled for delivery by November 2028. This order increases TMS Cardiff Gasás total new orders to ten LNG carriers from three major South Korean shipyards, with two expected to be delivered in 2026.

This strategic move aligns with a broader industry trend recognizing LNG as a pivotal "bridge fuel" for the green transition in shipping, as highlighted by recent analyses from Intermodal. The shipping sector's rapid expansion of LNG-capable vessels underscores the growing market demand for cleaner fuel alternatives amid tightening environmental regulations.

Additionally, TMS Group is diversifying its investments in container shipping, illustrated by a recent $1.4 billion order for ten dual-fuel LNG container ships from Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard in China. This order comprises six firm vessels and four options, complementing a previous commitment for four methanol-capable container ships from HJ Shipbuilding & Construction in South Korea.

Historically focused on conventional fuel vessels, Economou's shift towards dual-fuel and LNG vessels indicates a strategic pivot in the groupás investment policy, likely aimed at capitalizing on long-term charter opportunities in an evolving energy landscape. Currently, TMS Group manages a mixed fleet of 47 tankers, 48 bulk carriers, and 24 LNG carriers, with ongoing deliveries anticipated through 2026 and beyond.

In conclusion, TMS Group's proactive investments in LNG and dual-fuel technologies position it favorably within a rapidly changing maritime sector, reflecting a commitment to sustainability and operational efficiency.
