Tompkins County Calls for Thorough Review of TeraWulf AI Data Center in Lansing
Tompkins County Legislators passed a resolution urging state regulators to conduct a comprehensive review of a proposed AI data center by TeraWulf in Lansing, citing concerns over public transparency, water quality, and energy prices. The resolution requests the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to reject a water use permit renewal application and pursue a new permit process.
The existing water withdrawal permit, originally filed in 2020, would reduce daily withdrawal from 245 million gallons to 1.44 million gallons. TeraWulf stated the permit is for maintaining dormant systems during the site's transition to a data center.
Legislator Mike Sigler voted against the resolution, arguing it may inadvertently support further permit use. The DEC has not responded to inquiries.
