TotalEnergies and QatarEnergy Launch Major Infrastructure Projects to Boost Iraq's Energy Sector

HYDROGEN

In a pivotal move for Iraq's energy landscape, TotalEnergies and QatarEnergy have officially announced the commencement of two major infrastructure projects: the Common Seawater Supply Project (CSSP) and the full redevelopment of the Ratawi oil field. This announcement was made during a meeting in Baghdad, attended by key figures including Patrick Pouyann, CEO of TotalEnergies, and Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, Qatar's Minister of State for Energy Affairs.

The CSSP, poised to become a cornerstone of Iraq’s oil industry, will process and transport an impressive 5 million barrels of seawater daily to oil fields in the southern region. This initiative is critical as it substitutes treated seawater for freshwater drawn from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, alleviating regional water stress and freeing up approximately 250,000 cubic meters of freshwater each day for agricultural needs.

Simultaneously, the redevelopment of the Ratawi oil field aims to escalate production from its current levels to 120,000 barrels per day by early 2026, with a subsequent phase targeting an increase to 210,000 barrels by 2028. Notably, this redevelopment will be executed with a commitment to eliminate routine flaring, a significant environmental concern, while fully processing all associated gas produced. The Gas Midstream Project, which will complement these efforts by treating flared gas and integrating it into the national grid, is slated to deliver processed gas to power plants capable of supplying approximately 1.5 gigawatts of electricity to 1.5 million households.

The multifaceted Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP), which encompasses the CSSP and the Ratawi redevelopment, exemplifies TotalEnergies' commitment to sustainable energy practices while enhancing Iraq's electricity supply and energy independence. With all project components now in execution, an estimated 7,000 Iraqi workers are expected to be mobilized during the construction phase, marking a significant achievement in the partnership's goal to contribute directly to the local economy.

As these projects unfold, they not only promise to bolster Iraq's energy infrastructure but also illustrate a strategic transition towards a more sustainable energy future, aligning with TotalEnergies' broader multi-energy strategy.
