Town Hall Closure for District Heating Upgrade Planned from July to September
The town hall will undergo substantial plumbing work over three months to enhance its district heating system. The initiative aims to improve heating efficiency and support a decarbonization effort within the local council's properties.

The town hall is scheduled to close for approximately three months from July to September for major plumbing works related to its district heating system. This phase will involve a comprehensive replumb of the Grade A listed building, including new cast iron radiators and pipework to replace the outdated plumbing still in use.
The district heating system, operated by Shetland Heat Energy and Power Ltd (Sheap), has serviced the area for over 25 years, utilizing waste heat to provide hot water to connected properties. Currently, one-third of local properties benefit from this network, which offers lower heating costs.
Future plans include potential district heating expansions in Brae and Scalloway, alongside new heat sources like Tagdale's green ammonia. The upgrade is expected to enhance system efficiency and return temperatures.
