Town of Ulster to Review Terra-Gen's Lithium-Ion Battery Project Amid Fire Safety Concerns
The Town Board of Ulster, N.Y. will prioritize fire suppression equipment and training details for Terra-Gen's proposed lithium-ion battery project during upcoming environmental reviews. Terra-Gen aims to install 300 industrial batteries at 430 Hurley Ave., previously a high school site.
Concerns have been raised regarding the lack of specifics from Terra-Gen about battery manufacturers and safety protocols. Local fire officials have sought to learn from national incidents involving Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
Terra-Gen's Vice President stated that they have a comprehensive fire-protection strategy in line with New York State standards. The project is part of Governor Kathy Hochul's initiative to implement large-scale battery technology in New York.
Testing by the state Energy Research and Development Authority will determine technology suitability. A public review process will begin following a board session on Feb. 5, 2025.
