Toyota Launches Pilot Program for Vehicle-to-Grid Charging in Texas to Support Power Grid
Toyota has launched a pilot program in Texas to explore vehicle-to-grid (V2G) charging technology in collaboration with Oncor and Fermata Energy. The initiative, which began in 2022, aims to stabilize the electrical grid during peak demand, provide backup power during outages, and reduce costs for customers by leveraging off-peak energy storage. Similar programs are also being conducted in San Diego and Maryland, with participation from local utilities to assess the economic and environmental benefits of connected vehicles.

Toyota is initiating a pilot program in Texas to optimize vehicle-to-grid (V2G) charging technology, collaborating with Oncor and using Fermata Energy's bidirectional charger. Toyota compares the potential of four million U.S. EVs to 40 nuclear reactors in their capacity to support the grid. The company is also conducting similar programs in San Diego and Maryland. Utilities including San Diego Gas and Electric and Pepco are participating in the research, which focuses on the economic and environmental benefits of connected vehicles.
