Tüpra's Sunfusion Project: Pioneering Biofuels and Advancing Low Carbon Economy Initiatives

HYDROGEN

Tüpra is embarking on an ambitious journey towards a low carbon economy through its strategic transformation plan, exemplified by the Sunfusion project. This initiative stands at the forefront of biofuel development, aiming to convert purified microalgae and oleaginous yeasts into sustainable energy sources. The project, which received backing from the European Commission's Horizon Europe program, employs hydrothermal liquefaction—a cutting-edge method that not only promises efficiency but also integrates solar energy to minimize environmental impact.

Commencing in January 2025 and spanning four years, the Sunfusion project unites ten partners across Turkey, Greece, France, Germany, Norway, and Serbia, fostering international collaboration in the quest for sustainable fuel alternatives. In the latter half of the project, Tüpra will focus on refining the bio-oil produced, ensuring that these innovations are poised for industrial application.

Tüpra's commitment to research and development is evident in its significant investment of 229.3 million Turkish Lira in 2024, aimed at accelerating innovation and sustainability. The company has successfully completed 17 projects under Horizon 2020 and continues to advance with seven ongoing initiatives under Horizon Europe. As part of its updated strategic transformation plan, Tüpra is prioritizing sustainable refining, zero carbon electricity, and green hydrogen, positioning itself as a leader in the energy sector's transition to carbon neutrality by 2050.

The Sunfusion project aspires to achieve over 50% energy conversion efficiency from solar power to biofuels, setting new benchmarks for renewable energy technologies. It aligns with the European Union's target of 45% renewable energy use by 2030 and aims to expedite the green transition in the transportation sector. Tüpra's proactive approach underscores its vision of integrating research and innovation as foundational strategies in the evolution towards a sustainable energy landscape.
