Transelectrica Proposes High-Level Office to Accelerate Data Center Investments in Romania
Transelectrica's National Dispatch Center head, Virgiliu Ivan, has called for the establishment of a high-level office, potentially coordinated by the Prime Minister, to expedite approvals for large data center investments in Romania. This initiative aims to attract significant energy consumers and prevent administrative blockages. Currently, Romania's data center capacity is under 100 MW, and potential investors, including Google and Microsoft, are exploring opportunities. A memorandum was signed with Google in July 2024, but concrete developments are still awaited.

Virgiliu Ivan, head of Transelectrica's National Dispatch Center, emphasized the urgent need for a high-level office to facilitate timely approvals for large data center investments in Romania. He noted that while Transelectrica can issue Technical Connection Approvals (ATR) within three months, administrative delays hinder progress.
The country currently has under 100 MW of data center capacity, significantly lower than regional peers. In 2024, discussions about potential data centers by Google and Microsoft were prominent, with locations considered near Bucharest-Ilfov and Cluj. Despite a memorandum signed with Google in July 2024, no concrete actions have been realized, indicating the need for a streamlined governmental approach to support these investments and enhance Romania's digital infrastructure.
