Trinidad and Tobago Positioned to Become Regional Hub for Ammonia-Fueled Shipping

AMMONIA

The Fortescue Green Pioneer, the world's first ammonia-powered vessel, docked in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, to showcase ammonia as a zero-emission fuel for shipping. Trinidad and Tobago, with its eleven ammonia plants and an annual capacity of 5.2 to 5.67 million metric tonnes, is the largest net exporter of ammonia globally.

Industry leaders suggest the country could become a regional hub for ammonia and other low-carbon marine fuels, leveraging its existing infrastructure. Kenesjay Green Limited's Philip Julien highlighted the potential for creating a new industry in this sector.

Fortescue's Andrew Hoare noted Trinidad's strategic relevance due to its established shipping infrastructure. The International Maritime Organisation is pushing for decarbonization in the shipping industry, presenting opportunities for Trinidad’s economic growth through ammonia-fueled shipping.
