Trump Administration Announces 25% Tariff on Select AI Chips to Boost U.S. Semiconductor Production
U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed a 25% tariff on select AI chips, including NVIDIA's H200 and AMD's MI325X, aimed at boosting domestic semiconductor production and reducing reliance on overseas supply chains, particularly from Taiwan.
This decision follows a nine-month investigation under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act and is part of a broader strategy to enhance U.S. technological autonomy. Exemptions apply for chips used in U.S. data centers, startups, and public sector applications.
Additionally, chips destined for China must be routed through the U.S. for testing before being subject to the tariff. This move reflects ongoing efforts to encourage domestic chip manufacturing while addressing national security concerns related to technology exports. The announcement comes amid a backdrop of previous trade measures and aims to fortify the U.S. semiconductor industry against foreign competition.
