Trump Administration Issues Energy Executive Orders Focusing on Nuclear and Data Centers

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE

On January 20, 2025, President Trump issued an Executive Order (EO) prioritizing energy security, followed by a second EO on February 14 mandating a National Energy Dominance Strategy. Subsequent EOs addressed coal industry support, state power limitations, and nuclear industry reforms.

The U.S. faces an estimated 100 GW electricity capacity shortfall by the mid-2030s due to increased demand, particularly from data centers, which received significant investments from Amazon Web Services. The Biden administration’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) promoted renewable energy, while Trump's One Big Beautiful Act (OBBA) pivots to 'firm, dispatchable' sources, maintaining some support for nuclear.

Despite bipartisan support for nuclear, challenges remain, including cost overruns and lengthy construction timelines. The North American Electric Reliability Council warns that large data centers pose reliability challenges, leading to increased reliance on batteries for grid stability. Nuclear's integration with battery technology may enhance its role as a dispatchable power source.
