Tucson City Council Opposes Copper World Mine Amid Environmental Concerns; BHP's Vicuna Project Continues Operations
The Tucson City Council has formally opposed the auction of 160 acres for the Copper World Mine, urging Gov. Katie Hobbs to delay the sale for further environmental impact studies. Meanwhile, BHP and Lundin Mining's Vicuna project in Argentina resumed operations following a legal ruling despite earlier suspensions due to environmental assessments.

The Tucson City Council voted against the auction of 160 acres of Arizona State Trust Land requested by Hudbay Minerals for the proposed Copper World Mine, citing environmental and water quality concerns. The council has directed Mayor Regina Romero to request a postponement from Gov.
Katie Hobbs until a feasibility study can assess the mining site's impacts. In contrast, BHP and Lundin Mining's Vicuna project in Argentina received a court ruling allowing operations to continue, despite a temporary suspension ordered in La Rioja province over environmental assessments. This ruling secures the project’s operations and impacts the potential development of future copper mines in both regions.
