Turkey Leads EU in Battery Storage Capacity Amid Energy Transition
Turkey has authorized over 33GW of battery storage since 2022, outperforming EU leaders like Germany and Italy, which have 12-13GW. This development highlights Turkey's strategic investment in clean technology amid rising fossil fuel costs.

Turkey has approved more than 33GW of battery storage capacity since 2022, significantly exceeding the 12-13GW in leading EU countries. This initiative aligns with a 2022 mandate favoring renewable energy paired with storage, resulting in 221GW of applications, where Turkey's approvals represent 83% of its current wind and solar capacity.
Turkey aims to reach 120GW of installed wind and solar by 2035, yet its coal dependency remains high, contributing to 34% of its electricity last year. Challenges include permit delays and fluctuations in electricity market prices. The significant investment in battery projects positions Turkey as a potential regional energy hub, reflecting a shift towards cleaner energy solutions in developing nations.
