TÜV Rheinland Designated as Notified Body Under New EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542
TÜV Rheinland has been appointed as a Notified Body under the new EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542, effective February 2024, which replaces the previous Battery Directive. This designation allows TÜV Rheinland to support global manufacturers in compliance, testing, and conformity assessments throughout the battery lifecycle, enforcing stringent requirements on safety, sustainability, and responsible sourcing of materials like cobalt and nickel by August 2027. Manufacturers are required to engage accredited bodies for independent assessments to meet these new obligations.

TÜV Rheinland (InterCert) has been appointed as a Notified Body under the EU Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, replacing the previous Battery Directive. This designation enables TÜV Rheinland to assist global manufacturers with compliance, testing, and conformity assessments throughout the battery lifecycle.
The regulation, effective from February 2024, enforces stringent requirements on safety, performance, sustainability, recycling, and supply chain due diligence, including responsible sourcing of critical materials like cobalt and nickel starting in August 2027. Manufacturers must engage accredited bodies like TÜV Rheinland for independent assessments to ensure their battery products meet these new obligations, which extend beyond product performance to include accountability in sourcing and sustainability.
