Two MBPP Officers Injured in Hydrogen Balloon Explosion During Thaipusam in Penang
Two officers from the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) were injured on February 1 when confiscated hydrogen balloons exploded during a cleanup operation after the Thaipusam festivities. The incident occurred at approximately 10:45 PM along Jalan Kebun Bunga as the officers were loading the balloons into a council vehicle.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the balloons contained hydrogen gas, which is highly flammable and poses safety risks. One officer was hospitalized while the other sustained minor injuries. The unlicensed vendor responsible for the balloons, believed to be a foreign national, is under investigation for multiple violations, including selling dangerous products at a public event. MBPP has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the incident, including reviewing safety regulations and enforcement protocols to prevent future occurrences.
