HYDRO POWER

Two miners died in an underground accident at Mopani Copper Mines' South Ore Body Shaft in Kitwe on Tuesday at 17:45. Operations at the shaft have been suspended indefinitely. The incident was reported to local police by Mopani's Chief Security Manager.

In a separate development, the Zambezi River Authority has completed a review of the feasibility study for the Batoka Hydropower Station project. ZRA CEO Munyaradzi Munodawafa stated that the review covered the demo structure, power house, and capacity output.

The authority is awaiting the second phase of the Environmental Impact Assessment, expected to conclude in early 2015. Following the completion of necessary processes, ZRA aims to select a developer for the project, which is estimated to cost approximately $4 billion. Zambia and Zimbabwe have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for collaboration on the Batoka project.
