Two Sentenced, 19 Officials Disciplined After Shaanxi Explosion

On November 20, 2024, an explosion during the commissioning of a wastewater treatment retrofit project in Shenmu city resulted in four fatalities and six injuries. In response, two individuals were sentenced, and 19 officials faced disciplinary measures, including several city-level officials.
A provincial rectification assessment revealed that some companies involved had unresolved management deficiencies, prompting fines and corrective orders. Local regulators initiated a citywide safety inspection campaign, uncovering and addressing 35,000 hazards across the region, indicating ongoing safety concerns within the industry.
