UACJ and YKK AP Initiate Aluminum Recycling Project Targeting 2032 Output
A consortium led by UACJ and YKK AP, including Kobe Steel and five other organizations, has launched a project to enhance aluminum recycling, supported by Japan's NEDO. Running from fiscal 2026 to 2031, the initiative aims to achieve mass production of recycled aluminum by 2032, addressing rising demand and industry needs for lower-emission materials.

The project, backed by Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), focuses on upgrading aluminum recycling processes to support a resource-circulating society. It includes participation from Asahi Seiren, Aizos, Honda R&D, Toyo Seikan, and the Japan Aluminium Association.
The initiative follows a previous NEDO-supported project (fiscal 2021-2025) that developed core technologies for reducing impurities in recycled aluminum. The new phase will establish automation and component technologies for stable factory processes and conduct commercial-scale demonstrations. By fiscal 2040, the project anticipates a combined annual production capacity of 215,000 metric tons of recycled aluminum, yielding significant energy savings.
