UCT's Rhiyaad Mohamed Secures EQT Foundation Grant for Green Hydrogen Research
Associate Professor Rhiyaad Mohamed from the University of Cape Town has received the 2026 EQT Foundation Critical Minerals Science Grant. This funding will enhance research aimed at developing more efficient anodes for proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers, crucial for affordable green hydrogen production.

The University of Cape Town (UCT) has been awarded the 2026 EQT Foundation Critical Minerals Science Grant, with funding directed towards developing ultra-low-iridium anodes for proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysers. This research aims to significantly reduce iridium usage, a key barrier to scaling green hydrogen production, while maintaining necessary performance and durability.
Mohamed's work aligns with South Africa's Hydrogen Society Roadmap and emphasizes the role of African researchers in clean energy technology development. The project also focuses on skills development for postgraduate students in advanced materials and electrochemical engineering, contributing to a local green hydrogen value chain.
