Uganda Advances Energy Transition with Oil Revenues at Africa Energy Indaba 2026

HYDRO POWER

At the Africa Energy Indaba 2026, Uganda highlights its energy transition, leveraging oil revenues to finance a shift towards carbon neutrality by 2050. The country has reached 2,052.6MW of installed capacity, largely due to the 600MW Karuma Hydro Power Plant, but only 28% of Ugandans are connected to the national grid.

The East African Crude Oil Pipeline is 79% complete, with the first shipment scheduled for October 2026. The Ugandan government aims to eradicate energy poverty, which is currently hindered by low rural grid access at 9.1% and high connection costs.

In April 2025, the government ended the Umeme concession, leading to 648,404 new connections in six months. Regional power pools are emerging to enhance energy market integration. Global investments are shifting towards renewable energy, with Nigeria targeting US$410 billion by 2060 and the EU committing €150 billion for sustainable infrastructure in Africa by 2030.
