Uganda Initiates UGX 800 Million Project for Artisanal Mining Formalization
Uganda has launched an 800 million shilling initiative to formalize artisanal mining, enhancing sector contribution to GDP. The TENT Grant Initiative aims to transition informal operations into structured enterprises over a 12-month period.

The TENT Grant Initiative, funded by the European Union and the German government, began in November 2025 and will run until October 2026. Its objective is to formalize operations of 20 cooperatives across 10 districts, focusing on minerals like gold, tin, tungsten, and iron ore.
Financial institutions are set to provide banking and credit services, while miners will connect with private sector off-takers. The initiative emphasizes gender inclusivity, mandating that 20% of cooperatives be women-led. Additionally, biometric registration for miners is being conducted to enhance oversight and compliance with the Mining and Minerals Act of 2022, which facilitates licensing for artisanal miners.
