Uganda's Installed Power Capacity Reaches 2,052.6MW with Karuma Hydro Plant Commissioned
Uganda's installed power capacity has reached 2,052.6MW following the full commissioning of the 600MW Karuma Hydro Power Plant in June 2024. This increase is part of a strategic restructuring of the electricity sector aimed at ensuring long-term reliability and affordability.
The dispatch of electricity to the grid rose from 4,078GWh in 2018 to 6,623GWh in 2024, with Isimba and Karuma contributing approximately 27% of total power in 2025. The government has invested $100 million for grid reinforcement and modernization, addressing distribution challenges.
The Lifeline Tariff protects low-income consumers, while the weighted average generation tariff has decreased. By 2030, Uganda aims to achieve an inclusive energy future that supports socio-economic transformation.
