UK and France Progress Offshore Wind Projects Amidst Market Fluctuations
The UK targets 43GW of offshore wind by 2030, with recent support rounds highlighting mixed outcomes. Ireland's Tonn Nua auction succeeded, while France plans to increase its capacity to 15GW by 2035 despite political risks. Both countries utilize contracts for difference (CfDs) to support developers amid fluctuating budgets and site conditions.

The UK has 16.6GW of operational offshore wind and aims for 43GW by 2030. The Crown Estate conducts seabed lease auctions, with the latest focused on floating wind in the Celtic Sea. The UK’s Department of Energy Security and Net Zero allocated an initial £1.1bn for the latest auction, increasing support for fixed-bottom sites.
Ireland’s Tonn Nua auction was successful, offering a 20-year CfD and seabed lease rights. France is gradually building its offshore capacity, planning to reach 15GW by 2035, but faces political risks from upcoming elections. The next French tender (AO9) will include floating wind sites, with expectations for a bidding phase to start soon.
