UK Approves Rivenhall Greenhouse to Enhance Food Independence
The Rivenhall Greenhouse project has received planning approval, enabling a significant step towards UK food security. This £150 million initiative aims to produce 30,000 tonnes of tomatoes annually, potentially covering 7.5% of current UK imports and creating over 400 jobs.

Essex County Council has approved the Rivenhall Greenhouse project, a £150 million investment that aims to re-shore food production in the UK. The project, developed by Rivenhall Greenhouse Limited, will utilize a partnership with Indaver Integrated Waste Management Facility to supply approximately 90% of its heat and 100% of its electricity, supporting a circular economy model.
At full capacity, the facility could produce 30,000 tonnes of tomatoes annually, addressing vulnerabilities in the UK's food supply that heavily relies on imports. Additionally, five similar CEA developments are planned across the UK, contingent upon a supportive policy environment. This initiative underscores the need for enhanced domestic food production amidst global market uncertainties.
