UK ASPIRE Project Launches Green Ammonia Plant for Energy Storage Solutions

The UK has launched a new prototype facility under the ASPIRE project to produce green ammonia using renewable electricity. This technology enables the storage of unused wind energy as hydrogen in green ammonia, which can later be converted back to electricity.

Funded by the £1 billion Net Zero Innovation Portfolio, the plant aims to reduce costs associated with decarbonization and facilitate commercial competition with traditional fossil fuel production. In 2024, approximately 10% of wind-generated power in Great Britain was unused, highlighting the potential for innovative energy storage.

The ASPIRE technology addresses energy efficiency and aims to decarbonize sectors like shipping and fertilizer manufacturing, while also providing low-carbon hydrogen through ammonia cracking. The UK's commitment includes a £1.1 billion investment for offshore wind to achieve a zero-carbon electricity system by 2030 and a target to reduce emissions by 81% by 2035.
