UK Awards Record Offshore Wind Contracts to Boost Clean Energy Capacity
The UK has awarded a record number of offshore wind contracts to enhance its clean energy capacity, targeting at least 95% of electricity from low-carbon sources by 2030. Key projects include Berwick Bank and Dogger Bank South, contributing to a goal of 43 GW of offshore wind capacity, up from the current 16.6 GW. However, rising costs and deployment challenges may hinder the achievement of these ambitious targets.

The UK has awarded contracts for a historic volume of offshore wind projects across England, Scotland, and Wales, aimed at expanding low-carbon electricity capacity. Key projects include Berwick Bank, Dogger Bank South, Norfolk Vanguard, and Awel y Môr.
The government aims for at least 95% of Great Britain's electricity to come from clean sources by 2030, with a target of 43 GW of offshore wind capacity. Current offshore wind capacity is 16.6 GW, with 11.7 GW under construction. The latest auction secured 8.4 GW but rising costs and deployment challenges pose risks to meeting targets.
