UK Battery Storage Market Sees Growth with 96 GWh Capacity Submitted for 2025
The UK battery storage development market reported over 96 GWh of capacity submitted for 2025, a 25% increase from 2024. Q2 2025 surpassed Q4 2024 in quarterly capacity, driven by large-capacity projects.
The last quarter of 2024 saw the highest number of applications due to grid reform deadlines. The average project size in 2025 is over 400 MWh, with increased interest in long-duration energy storage. July had the most applications, while May saw the largest capacity submitted.
The rejection rate for applications decreased from 21% in 2024 to 14% in 2025. The Cap and Floor Scheme for long-duration energy storage shows potential for alternative technologies, with vanadium flow batteries gaining traction.
Yorkshire and Humberside had the most approved capacity, while investor interest remains high despite the UK not being the top market. The energy storage sector may evolve into a more streamlined landscape as it matures.
