U.K. Critical Minerals Strategy Presents Opportunities for B.C. Amid Buy Canadian Concerns
The U.K.'s critical minerals strategy could benefit B.C. by enhancing supply chains, but the British consul general warns that Canada's Buy Canadian policy may hinder international competitiveness and investor interest.

The U.K. government’s new critical minerals strategy aims to enhance domestic production and establish resilient supply networks globally, including with Canada. The strategy targets sourcing 10% of the U.K.'s minerals domestically and 20% through recycling by 2035.
British consul general Thomas Codrington emphasized the need for B.C. to develop midstream capabilities, such as smelters, to ensure reliability in the supply chain. He expressed concern that the Buy Canadian policy could alienate international partners and hinder investment. The U.K. seeks deeper collaboration with B.C. in various sectors while navigating the implications of domestic procurement policies.
