UK Government Invests £36 Million to Enhance Cambridge's DAWN Supercomputer Capacity Sixfold by 2026
The UK government is investing £36 million to increase the DAWN supercomputer's capacity at the University of Cambridge sixfold by Spring 2026. This investment supports the AI Research Resource (AIRR), which provides free access to powerful computing for researchers and start-ups.
The funding is part of a broader strategy to bolster the UK's computing infrastructure, with over £2 billion committed to AI advancements. The DAWN supercomputer, already instrumental in over 350 projects, will now include AMD's latest MI355X chips, enabling researchers to handle larger datasets and develop advanced AI tools for healthcare and environmental modeling. The initiative aims to enhance disease detection and improve public services while diversifying the UK’s computing technology landscape.
