UK Government Rejects EV Charging Hub Due to Battery Fire Risks
The UK government has denied a planning application for an EV charging hub in Devon, citing potential contamination risks from battery fires. Developers plan to revise their proposal following rejection.

The UK government has rejected a planning application for a proposed EV charging hub at Greendale Business Park near Exeter, primarily due to concerns over battery fire risks and potential water contamination. The application, initially submitted in early 2024 and retracted before resubmission in 2025, included plans for 30 EV charging bays, two HGV chargers, and a battery energy storage system (BESS).
The East Devon District Council raised multiple objections, including inadequate access to trunk roads and lack of security. The Planning Inspectorate echoed these concerns, highlighting the risk of contaminated runoff from firefighting efforts in the event of a fire. Developers plan to revise and resubmit their project.
