UK Government Upgrades Radar Systems to Unlock 10 GW of Offshore Wind Capacity
The UK government will upgrade air defence radars to unlock up to 10 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030. The new radars, to be installed from early 2029, will ensure coexistence with offshore wind farms and enhance national security. This initiative follows a record procurement of 8.4 GW of offshore wind energy, sufficient to power 12 million homes. The upgrades will facilitate the transition from contract to construction for this offshore capacity.

The UK government announced upgrades to air defence radars that will unlock up to 10 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030. These specially designed radars, to be installed from early 2029, will mitigate interference from offshore wind farms, ensuring the safety of UK airspace and supporting energy security.
This follows the procurement of 8.4 GW of offshore wind energy, enough to power 12 million homes. The radar upgrades are integral to moving the record offshore capacity from contract to construction, promoting clean energy and national security.
