UK Green Future Fellowships Fund Innovative Energy Solutions in Aerospace and Solar Technology
The UK Science Minister Lord Patrick Vallance emphasized the need for engineering solutions to address the climate crisis. The Green Future Fellowships will support researchers in developing innovative technologies for renewable energy storage and greenhouse gas extraction.
Professor Robert House will use his Fellowship to create a new battery that is four times more energy dense than current lithium-ion batteries, aimed at electric and hybrid aeroplanes. This development could reduce weight, enhance efficiency, and electrify air travel.
Professor Moritz Riede will focus on commercializing organic photovoltaics (OPV) to provide cleaner energy with a lower environmental footprint than traditional solar panels. He plans to leverage automation and machine learning to improve production methods for OPV, aiming for over 20% efficiency at industrial scale, thereby contributing to the UK’s Net Zero goals and promoting a fair energy transition.
