UK Housebuilders Exempt from Battery Storage Requirement in New Homes
UK housebuilders have influenced the government to exclude battery storage requirements from the upcoming Future Homes Standard. The revised standard, expected this month, will mandate solar panels and high insulation but will not require batteries despite their potential for energy savings.
Batteries allow for energy captured from solar panels to be stored for later use, benefiting both households and the electricity grid. However, industry representatives argue against compulsory battery systems due to high upfront costs, with household batteries ranging from £3,000 to over £10,000.
Critics highlight that omitting batteries limits energy efficiency improvements and increases reliance on imported gas. Research indicates homes with solar, heat pumps, and batteries could save up to £1,350 annually on energy bills.
