UK Launches First Commercial Hydrogen-Fueled Brick Factory
The UK's first commercial hydrogen-powered brick factory aims to reduce carbon emissions by over 11,600 tons annually. This initiative represents a significant shift towards sustainable industrial practices in the brick manufacturing sector.

Wienerberger UK & Ireland is set to invest approximately €7 million in converting existing natural gas kilns to utilize green hydrogen at its Denton plant, expected to be operational by 2027. Michelmersh Brick Holdings previously demonstrated the viability of this technology in pilot tests, achieving an 84% reduction in emissions and producing bricks with compressive strength exceeding 27 N/mm².
The hydrogen supply will be managed under a 15-year contract with Trafford Green Hydrogen. The project is supported by UK government funding initiatives, with a goal to fully transition to hydrogen by 2028. The shift is indicative of broader trends in the European ceramics industry towards multiple complementary technologies for emission reductions.
